Major changes in Femsjö

Poverty and starvation in the 19th century made many people from Femsjö try their luck in America. The emigration commenced in 1869 and continued until 1923. Those who stayed on in Femsjö and their descendents came to experience major changes. Until the mid 20th century most people in Femsjö depended on farming and forestry for their subsistence. Since then, a dramatic mechanisation and rationalisation has taken place.

Now, in the early years of the 21st century, it is only very few households in Femsjö that predominantly depend on farming. Instead, many people work in centres within commuting distance. Others benefit from modern communication technology and new businesses have appeared in the local economy.
